Course Description

This is a hybrid course for licensed practitioners who are interested in the Movement System Syndromes of the Upper Extremities. You can choose to participate virtually or attend the course onsite at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. For those attending the course onsite, you must show proof that you are a physical therapist or a physician. All other professionals are encouraged to participate virtually. The two-day hybrid course provides instruction in the concepts and application of the systematic examination and treatments of the shoulder, cervical, and thoracic spines. The neuromusculoskeletal adaptations associated with these syndromes are discussed.
The course consists of lectures about Movement System Syndromes of the cervical and thoracic spines. Also included are live demonstrations on painful volunteers, lab sessions for onsite participants, and virtual video analysis in small groups for virtual participants. Since the basic principles and shoulder syndromes were already discussed at the previous courses, participants are strongly encouraged to have studied:

• Upper Quarter Foundation Webinar Series from 2026, self-paced online course
• Movement System Syndromes of the Shoulder from June 2026, self-paced online course

Participants will receive instruction for the performance of systematic examination for shoulder / cervical / thoracic spine. The systematic examination includes assessment of alignment and movement patterns, and their specific role in influencing the suboptimal patterns of the shoulder / cervical / thoracic spine. The participants are guided in synthesizing the results of the systematic examination to determine a Movement System diagnosis. Discussion will take place to explain how the diagnosis and contributing factors provide the guidelines for treatment.

Onsite participants will practice the systematic examination with feedback provided by faculty and, as a member of a small group, perform a complete exam on a fellow participant. Virtual participants will practice their alignment / movement analysis in small groups.
